All 5 of the Tōtara classes have visited the Art Gallery over the last week. We learnt about drawing techniques and applied our new knowledge and skills into a pastel art piece.
Some of us also visited the Botanical Gardens while we waited for our session. For many, this was a first visit!
The mighty Tōtara tree stands tall and proud. It protects those smaller than itself. In ancient times it was used to build waka that carried hundreds of warriors and build whare to protect people from the earths elements. As the team gifted with the name tōtara, we take on much of it’s meaning. We protect those who are younger than us and we support others by encouraging them, and being active role models in our kura. We are the leaders of KNS.

Week 6 in Room 18 and 19
It's been a busy week with Beach Ed, the Cultural Celebration and the final 3 Peaks challenge. We are looking forward to our trip to the art gallery on Monday, the Performing Arts evening and Golfing at Kaiapoi Golf course next week too!
Today we looked at Stained Glass Art by Dale Chihuly and were inspired to make our own bowls. They turned out great! We also learned to play a game called 'Dama' and used our bowls to keep the counters in.

Constable Ken - Cyber Safety
Constable Ken has spent the morning speaking to our Year 7 and 8 students about cyber safety. Did you know that the legal age to own a Youtube, Snapchat, Instagram, Twitter and Facebook account is 13 years old? Our students felt really informed as they found out some laws and rules they didn't know about. The main thing is to think about what we are posting online because it never goes away!

Fletch and Jayden's Fundraiser Run
Fletcher and Jayden created a relay run to fundraise money for outdoor furniture for the new tōtara buildings. They gathered a strong team of year 7/8 students from each house to run a relay for 6 hours around our school reserve. We were so proud of the student efforts!
